TM in Western Pacific

The WHO Western Pacific Region encompasses one of the world’s richest Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) landscapes, spanning Traditional Chinese Medicine, Kampo, Korean Medicine, Pacific Island healing, rongoā Māori and Southeast Asian Indigenous practices. Healing traditions include herbalism, acupuncture, massage, spiritual ceremonies and land-based care.

Integration is well developed in countries such as China, Republic of Korea, Viet Nam and Japan, where traditional systems are supported by national policy, education and research. In Pacific Island states and Indigenous communities (e.g., Māori, iTaukei, Chamorro), healing remains rooted in cosmology, kinship and ecological knowledge.

The region has contributed over 187 613 documents to the Traditional Medicine Global Library, covering themes such as biodiversity, Indigenous midwifery, integrative oncology, climate-linked healing and cultural safety in service delivery.
