TM in Europe

The WHO European Region reflects a mosaic of Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) systems, from Slavic, Nordic and Mediterranean folk medicine to institutionalized systems such as homeopathy, anthroposophic medicine, phytotherapy and acupuncture. Healing traditions are often interwoven with Christian monastic knowledge, Indigenous practices and forest-based therapeutics.

Many countries in Europe have formalized TCIM regulation and education, particularly in phytotherapy, acupuncture and integrative care. Nations like Germany, Switzerland and France have developed strong institutional frameworks, while eastern and central European countries emphasize community knowledge preservation and rural health.

The region has contributed over 779 163 documents to the Traditional Medicine Global Library, covering themes such as plant extracts, ecosystem, medicinal plants and antioxidants.
