TM in East Mediterranean

The WHO East Mediterranean Region hosts a diverse array of Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine systems, including Unani medicine, Islamic medicine, Pharaonic and Greco–Arabic traditions and Indigenous spiritual healing. Herbalism, cupping (hijama), cautery, spiritual cleansing and dietary therapies remain culturally embedded practices across the region.

Integration varies across countries. Iran has fully institutionalized Unani medicine, while others (such as Egypt, Pakistan and Morocco) have regulatory frameworks, Traditional Medicine councils and formal educational institutions. Spiritual healers, herbalists and midwives serve culturally specific roles, especially in maternal and chronic care.

The region has contributed over 16 512 documents to the Traditional Medicine Global Library, covering themes such as Islamic healing texts, traditional pharmacopoeias, integration policies and ethnomedicine case studies.
