Cuba recognizes Natural and Traditional Medicine as a medical specialty, with a holistic and integrative approach to health problems using methods of health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation which come from traditional medica systems and other therapeutic modalities that are integrated with each other and with conventional treatments from modern Western Medicine.<\/span> There are 11 therapeutic modalities recognized in the country: acupuncture, phytotherapy, apitherapy, homeopathy, Bach flower therapy, ozone therapy, traditional exercises, medical hydrology, sun-thalassotherapy, natural nutrition and, more recently, Ayurveda.<\/span><\/p>\n

The country has developed a state-supported model of integrative medicine, articulating biomedical care with Natural and Traditional Medicine within the national health system. Beyond historical roots of Indigenous knowledge and the influence of Spanish, African and Chinese traditions, strong government support and technical guidance from the Ministry of Public Health underpins this successful model of care. The National Program for the Development and Consolidation of Natural and Traditional Medicine was endorsed in 1997. A strong legal and regulatory framework has gradually been established to back up this articulation, in addition to medical education and research strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cuba\u2019s basic list of natural products, attached to the national basic list of\u00a0medicines, reached 179 items in 2025. Phytotherapy and acupuncture are the two forms of Natural and Traditional Medicine most prescribed by physicians and most reported by the population, according to the Complementary Statistical Information Subsystem of the Ministry of Public Health and the National Health Survey 2018\u20132019,
