TM in Americas

The WHO Americas Region encompasses a rich array of Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) systems, including Indigenous medicine, healing of African descent, traditional herbalism, shamanism and integrative spiritual care. These TCIM systems are practised from the Andes and Amazon to the Caribbean and North America, reflecting cultural continuity and land-based knowledge.

Several countries have enacted national policies to support TCIM articulation, including the Unified Health System in Brazil, the Indigenous Intercultural Health System in Colombia, and the Indian Health Service in the United States of America. In many countries, traditional midwives, community healers and plant specialists play central roles in maternal care, chronic disease management and trauma healing.

The region has contributed over 591 691 documents to the Traditional Medicine Global Library, covering themes such as health sovereignty, spiritual healing, Indigenous pharmacopoeias and biodiversity conservation. Regional efforts are increasingly focused on legal recognition, intercultural service models and Indigenous-led health strategies.
