Zambia\u2019s Traditional Medicine systems are central to health care for many communities, especially in rural provinces. Drawing on the wisdom of Bemba, Tonga, Lozi and Chewa cultures, healing practices include herbalism, divination, bone-setting and spiritual protection. Practitioners \u2013 <\/span>ng\u2019anga<\/span><\/i>, herbalists and spiritual mediums \u2013 are often the first point of care and play important social and cultural roles.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Ministry of Health\u00a0has developed a\u00a0National Traditional Medicine Policy\u00a0and supports regulation through the Traditional Health Practitioners Council. Governmental and academic institutions are involved in research, pharmacopoeia development and safety evaluations. Traditional healers are also engaged in health promotion activities related to HIV\/AIDS, tuberculosis and
